This Mother’s Day was bittersweet for me. I lost my mother-in-law, Helen, last year on the morning of Mother’s Day. I had spoken to her that morning and then she passed with the phone still in her hand. Needless to say, we are working through her loss and miss her every day. She was a very kindhearted and fun lady to be around. Her smile was contagious, and her laugh too would bring a smile to your face. I always enjoyed our conversations. I had my moments with her, but I would do anything to have her still here. So for those of you who still have a mother – appreciate her and spend as much time together making memories. Time is too short and before you know it, things happen in a blink of an eye and you will be left with only memories. I have 34 years of wonderful memories with Helen and for that I am thankful.
The girls have wonderful memories of being with Grandma Helen. The girls are little, but she surely made an impact on them. Thank goodness we have pictures and videos. They know she is in heaven but still talk about her and pray for her. They miss her everyday but having her picture in the house helps. It helps me too because it keeps her memories alive.
My children have wonderful memories too but don’t talk too much about them. It is still pretty “raw” for us all.
Nonetheless, my family and I have always been close, and this holiday was no different. My children and grandchildren helped me to have a wonderful weekend and day. We cooked together, we played games, had a tea party (the girls’ favorite thing to do) and just enjoyed each other’s company. My daughter, Amy, made Grandma Helen’s cheesecake! Delicious. I know Grandma Helen would be proud. We will always have this dessert – it was Grandma’s favorite. Amy has managed to recreate it perfectly. Carolyn, my oldest child got to experience “bath time” – the girls played so hard outside that baths were necessary. She also got to do some science experiments with them and enjoy tea.
There is never a dull moment either when my son, Tom, is around. His smile and charisma always bring a smile to my face. He continually makes me laugh. The girls too, love to be around Uncle Tommy. They get a kick out of Tommy participating in the tea party as well. He loves his nieces and it shows.
Well, my day wouldn’t have been complete, but it was – my son in law, Dustin came to visit and have dinner with us. This is the first time Dustin was out of the house since having foot surgery. I was so excited to see him because I know it was a lot for him to come out. We even enjoyed our favorite game, Skipbo. Now that I look at the title of the card game, it’s kind of funny seeing that he can’t even walk – he can hop though with crutches. Dustin coming to the house made my day because my whole family was together. My family is my gift from God, and I cherish each moment.
I hope all that read my blog realize that I am here to share messages and hope to help you realize life is short, enjoy each moment…
