I’m going to call this week – Wedding No. 1. Amber and Joey are getting married on Friday and we can’t wait to celebrate with them.
We arrived at Massanutten Resort today and I have not stopped laughing since my feet hit the ground. Our friends who are staying with us are a “hoot” – they are the parents of the groom and very dear friends of ours. My husband and Joey lived down the street from each other and played GI Joes as children. So we know everything about each other and that of our kids.
All of us put together under two adjoining condos is a dangerous mix of constant laughter. The best part is their son William, who is 16. He looks at us sometimes and can’t believe the things that fly out of our mouths. The faces he gives us and the shy shaking of his head makes us laugh even more. The following are some stories just from Day 1:
- When Barb and Joey arrived and checked out the “pad” for the week, Sophia, my granddaughter accompanied Barb for the tour. Barb said afterwards, “I’m not going home, I’m staying here forever.” Sophia noted “me too”. Olivia, my other granddaughter, just looked at them and left the room – I’m sure she was contemplating what they meant because she wasn’t leaving all her JJ toys in Waynesboro. This may not sound funny but the way she said it, and Olivia’s facial expression as she left the room was cute and we all laughed.
- We were all on the deck enjoying some drinks and we looked over to our right and we could see a lady standing near the glass door. She looked like she was smiling at us, but actually, she wasn’t smiling at us, her hubby was starting some “sexy time” with her. As he hugged her, her hand went up and there went the drapes closed. We laughed so hard – only in VA. Isn’t the saying – Virginia is for Lovers!
- We are in two condos that join each other. It seems to Barb that it takes 2 hours for the ice machine in both our units to make 6 pieces of ice when you first turn on the machine, but that is not the case but tonight it seemed like it. Barb and I continue to split the ice. Note to self – make sure you turn on the ice machine. Dustin noted to Barb that we have an ice machine – Barb says, I’m not waiting all day for 12 pieces of ice – Now she is serious about her ice. Barb asked Dustin to remind her to get a bag of ice tomorrow. She would ask him throughout the night what he needed to remind her of to get at the store and before he could answer, she would growl “ICE” – I guess you had to be there, but each time she asked him, we laughed even harder. I hope we remember the ice tomorrow.
- We were unpacking and decided we would have pizza. Barb elected her son William and hubby Joey to make the pizzas and Dustin assisted as well. (Three guys to make 4 frozen pizzas – how hard could that be?) Amy advised when she came over to the other half of the condo – “Mom, I don’t know what’s going on but it’s a mess over there”. Barb and I went over to check – it was fine – a few pieces of cheese on the counter – no biggie to Barb and I. Because it’s Halloween, the pizzas were shaped in the form of ghosts and pumpkins (from Aldi’s) – delicious – recommend if you see them buy them. Not very long after that Amy came back over to where Barb and I were and said, “Ding – pizzas are done – Uncle Joey saved the day! The way she said it made us laugh.
- Barb tried opening the freezer door for some ice, hoping to see 6 pieces of ice at least made – she was struggling to open it and said “God, this freezer door, does it have a lock on it?” and you could tell it had a good suction on it and she was unable to open it. Dustin said, “use the other side”. There are no handles, but you pull it open from the bottom of the freezer door – we laughed so hard because when she pulled it open, the suction almost made her fall back. To her surprise, no ice was made yet – Dustin forgot to turn on the ice machine.
- The wildlife in Massanutten includes deer and bears. Sophia and Olivia are afraid of bears, so I told everyone that they are not allowed to say the word “bear” on this trip. Joey says, “why can’t we say bears?” The girls freaked out – “that’s why”. Barb noted that she raised five boys and she wasn’t used to having “girls” around. We were talking and I spelled out the word and Sophia looks up from the table and says “Nonna, I know what you are spelling – Bear – and she looks at us with these eyes – we laughed so hard again. Deep down inside, I’m hoping we see a bear so that the girls can say that they really did see a bear.
- Before Sophia went to bed she had to show Barb her masks that she sleeps with. She came running down the hall and said ” I wear my ass – oh I mean mask to bed to keep out the light” – I just can’t make this stuff up – we laughed again.
- I know you probably think I’m crazy by now, but let me assure you, we are laughing so much that my belly hurts. This is Day One – can’t wait to see what the week brings.
- The Bride and Groom join us tomorrow for two days before they head into town to get everything ready for the wedding.
